Q & A WITH DAVID GRACE
What is your offensive philosophy?
We will play an exciting brand of basketball that our players will love to play and our fans will like to watch. It will be a fast paced offense, fast breaking on every opportunity. We will run NBA and college sets that will take advantage of all kinds of defenses we will face. I have been very fortunate to learn from the best at the high major Division I college and NBA levels. We will use college and NBA terminology. This will prepare our players for the next level. They will already be ready to play at those levels.
What is your defensive philosophy?
We will use multiple defenses that will confuse our opponents. We will guard multiple actions the way we guarded at the Division I college level. After spending 14 years at the Division I college level I understand the shot clock and know how to affect it. We will use college and NBA terminology on the defensive end as well. We will use our defense to create offense.
What would you like Coyote fans to know about the 22-23 team?
We have not only very talented student-athletes, but they are also outstanding young men! Fans will enjoy watching them play and also enjoy getting to know them! They have been working extremely hard so please get to the Coyote Cage (Gym) early as we are expecting big crowds.
I assume you're excited about your upcoming season schedule. You guys have been invited to some pretty big events.
Yes I’m extremely excited. We have been invited to some of the best tournaments in the country, including a big event in Maryland. This is because of our student-athletes. I’m so excited for them. They have earned that!
What are your expectations of the student-athletes that will play for you?
I expect Integrity, service before self and excellence in all we do! We will play with class and dignity! We will be humble and relentless! We will care about each other! A family atmosphere! If we do these things the outcome will take care of itself.
You have been a college coach for many years, what are some of the differences in high school hoops versus college?
There are many, for one the age of the players, the school budgets, the size of the court, travel, not using synergy for scouts, sharing players with other sports etc… but the thing that’s the same in my opinion is practice and getting better everyday.
You won a State championship in 2006 as the head coach at South Mountain high school, that was 18 years ago, do you think the high school game has changed since the last time you coached at this level?
Yes. This year we will have a shot clock in high school ball. Thank God for that. We now have social media. There will be an open division here in Arizona. There are now more schools here inner state. I think the talent is about the same at AIA schools overall. There were some great coaches back then and there are now as well. My team at South was very very special and I like our team here at Centennial as well. They are both different but talented.
Speaking of social media, where did the idea to do a weekly podcast come from?
Back in 2004 when I became the head coach at South Mountain, I started doing a coaching journal that was a big success. It was the first of its kind here in Arizona. A lot of people loved reading it. I wanted to do a podcast now to reach even more people and college coaches as we are using it to help our student-athletes get recruited. It will also give a day to day inside look at our basketball program at Centennial. We will also talk about current events at the high school, college and NBA levels. It should be a lot of fun.
How will your college experiences help your current players who wish to play at the next level?
It will help immensely! Where they want to go, I have been there. Our skill development will help prepare them for the next level. I share with our guys all the time my experiences at the college level. I know what it takes to get there and also what it takes to excel at those levels. I also personally know most of the college coaches at different levels and a lot of NBA GM’s. I can make a call and get them recruited. I think that is huge. The college coaches and NBA GM’s trust me with my ability to evaluate. This helps our student-athletes in so many ways. I’ve been very fortunate to recruit and or coach more than 20 NBA pros with five of them being NBA lottery picks.
Tell everyone about your nonprofit organization Amazing Grace Warriors.
I’m really excited to get it up and running. It is a community giveback nonprofit where we will do backpack drives, free haircuts for children, feed the less fortunate, give free turkeys out during the holidays, visit the elderly and help them etc…We will also do basketball camps, have club basketball teams, coaches clinics, individual skill sessions, podcasts, tournaments etc…I’m huge on giving back and just very excited to get going.
